I think that sex is really a beautiful thing.  It’s an activity that allows for much exploration and self-expression that I believe is crucial to our personal development.

I have been looking into the definition of some key terms that people use to describe their sexuality.  I’ve also included some helpful terms that will help to understand sexual uniqueness. It is important to note that this information is not meant to define one’s sexuality as it is a fluid topic that can’t always fit neatly into the square packages which we’re used to placing genders and sex issues.  Like I said before, sexuality is a form of expression and this information is meant to help to elaborate ideas about different tastes and preferences.

In an effort to compile the most complete list of different variations of sexuality that are practiced, I have named every related term that I could think of from A-Z.  I welcome any constructive comments that people might have that I could add to this list.

A

Agender: A person that does not identify strictly into the male or female gender.  A strong sense of being both or neither sexes. Being of no sex or sex plural.

Androgynous: Refers to a mix of masculine and feminine features.  

Translation - In short, an androgynous person does not fit into one sole category of only male nor female.  The best example I can think of for this is David Bowie and Casey Legler.

Asexual: Sexless.  Having no interest or desire in sex.

Translation – This person practices abstinence without inner conflict.  There is no need to suppress their sexual urges as none are felt.  An example here could be a nun or priest that is not conflicted with their vow of celibacy.

Autosexual: Sexual stimulation generated by one’s own touch.

Translation – This can be anyone who masturbates, squeezes his or her own nipples or taps their own bottom.  In the sexual act the person is stimulated by his or her own touch, and not an external touch, such as from a partner.  A clear example of this is running your hands over your own body and enjoying your own touch while stimulating yourself.

Bisexual: Sexual attraction to both men and women.

Translation – Bisexual relationships can vary between same sex partners, opposite sex partners and much more.  A bisexual person does not need to engage in a sexual act with both sexes, to fit this description.  The term merely describes a sexual affinity for both sexes.  An example of this could be a member in a threesome.

Cross-dresser: A person who adopts manner, sexual role or fashion wear designed for the opposite sex.

Drag Queen: (1) An identity for men.  This could refer to a man dressed in women’s clothing. 

Translation - Often a drag queen will but is not limited to dress up for entertainment purposes.  Think of one of the best known drag queens RuPaul.

(2) This could also refer to a homosexual transvestite. See the definition homosexual and transvestite.

Translation: Don’t judge a book by its cover.  You may not be able to guess a drag queen’s sex based on physical attributes, but then again why should you?  Ask a person to know which gender they identify with to know for sure.

Gay: Sexual attraction to one’s same sex. (Especially for men.)

Translation – This is a same sex romantic or sexual relationship that in a couple takes the form of man-man or woman-woman.  Some celebrity gay couples are Anderson Cooper and Ben Maisani, or Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka.

Hermaphrodite:  A biological term referring to an organism with both female and male reproductive systems.

Translation - Move over Freud, this has got to be one self-fulfilled human being!  A hermaphrodite has both male and female genitals and sometimes coarse pubic hair and endowed breasts.  Sadly, some babies at birth have one reproductive system removed or supressed at birth based on their parent’s decision, but the psychological attachment to one’s sex can linger on for a lifetime.

Heterosexual: Sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex. 

Translation – As pair this takes the form of man-woman. An example of celebrity couples come to mind like Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, or Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson.

Homosexual: This is another word for gay (hyperlink to definition above) which describes a romantic or sexual attraction to one’s same sex or gender, however this term is inclusive of men and women.  “Homo” in this sense means same or identical.

Translation: In a coupled this can take the form of man-man or woman-woman, or another same gender variation.

Intersex: Refers to a person born with reproductive or sexual anatomy of both sexes and does not identify solely as male or female.  This term describes a sex or gender that is a mix of male and female.

Lesbian: Sexual and romantic attraction between females.

Translation – A lesbian attraction is only between females and takes form in a couple as woman-woman.  Think of celebrity couples like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Ross, or Kristianna Loken and Michelle Rodriguez.

Pansexuality: Sexual and romantic attraction to all peoples regardless of the gender or sexual orientation.

Translation – A pansexual attraction is more inclusive than bisexual, for example.  A pansexual attraction is not limited to men and woman, but also includes androgynous, intersex, transgender and transsexual persons.

Queer: Term that holds negative connotation towards homosexual persons. It is still in use, but the word is less popular because of its misuse as a derogatory and hateful term.

Shemale: This term describes the physical appearance of a person working in the sex trade born with a penis who augments their breasts’ size through surgery or by taking pills. 

Translation - This person works in the sex industry.  The physical characteristics are a mix of both male and female.  However, through feminine makeup and wardrobe, and sometimes mannerisms a Shemale might be physically perceived as a woman.

Tranny: This is often an offensive term used in reference to a transvestite, transgender or transsexual person.

Transgender:  A person taking on the physical characteristics of, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member of the opposite sex.

Translation:  This person opposes the sex that they were assigned at birth and transforms themselves into the opposite sex.  An example of this could be the Jenna Talackova.

Transvestite: A person, usually male, who cross-dresses to gain a feeling of sexual or emotional gratification.

Translation: This is a person gets a positive feeling by wearing clothes that are designed for the opposite sex.  One example of this could be the character called Dr. Frank-N-Furter from the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Transsexual: A person that does not identify with the gender which was assigned at birth, but strongly with that of the opposite sex.  Choosing to live as a member of the opposite gender often through reassignment surgery, but not always.

Translation: This person identifies and lives their life as the opposite sex.  In the eyes of the community at large, the person for all intents and purpose is regarded as a member of the gender which has been accepted as his or her own.

The Top 7 Cringe-Worthy Celebrity Sex Tapes

Leaked, sold, and released into the masses

Ever watch a scary movie and turn your head away in terror?  After a couple of seconds your curiosity will kick in and you’ll be sneaking a peak, even if that means squinting to see through the chinks in between your fingers.   Next you’ll lower your hands staring straight at the screen even though you know it’ll freak you out.  Now, I’m not going to try and convince you that celebrity sex tapes are like horror films, and why would I?  Celebrity sex tapes are much worse, and more harmful.

In the 50’s and 60’s the notably popular celebrity Marilyn Monroe seduced (and still continues to seduce) her audiences with her charm, wit and sexual physical features.  Many criticized the true value of her talent as her performances in acting, singing, and modeling was enhanced by her winning personality.  Thankfully, when it comes to entertainment, the value is measured by each viewer, and many of Marilyn’s viewers were won over becoming her fans.

  

So, what does that mean for today’s celebrities?  Well, since the introduction of HD images, internet (most importantly high speed internet) and YouTube, information if easily distributed.  With the ease of information sharing, artist appreciation has shifted.  Where before artists would work their craft hoping to win the audience’s admiration, artists are now able to rise in popularity by creating intrigue and even distain.  Good publicity or bad publicity, it still makes the subject a popular topic.

That’s right, even when artists flunk in the talent department, they still have a wildcard up their sleeves: leaking their own celebrity sex tape.  So many internet users are subjected to porn one way or another, whether we like it or not, the material is shocking, surprising and exciting.  In short, this HD, colour image sex tape might be for some artists the only chance to provoke a strong reaction from their audiences.  

The sex tapes seem to be indicative of the earlier stages of the star’s career and/or perhaps even the level of immaturity of his or her choices. Not so surprisingly during times of career lows, the following seven celebrities bared it all to keep us all watching and interested. 

1. In the number one spot for sex tapes that we love to hate is Farrah Abraham from the reality TV show Teen Mom.  Before Farrah’s sex tape release, her life read like somewhat of a story that underlined the unpredictability of life and the harsh consequences of becoming a teenage single parent.  This reflection on the importance, especially for the youth, to practice safe sex, was interrupted with her scandalous and very professional looking sex video.  The questionable sale of the sex tape for a whopping $1.5 million makes this star something of a paradox.

2. Snooki is yet another reality TV star looking for fame in all of the wrong places.  I suppose it’s easy to have warped morals when you are famed for all of the terribly embarrassing things you do!  Snooki has since cleaned up her act, getting engaged and having a child.  Mommy’s going to have a hard time hiding her own sex tape and shielding her child from the trauma that most of us suffered while watching.

3. Somewhere along the road in Paris Hilton’s search to create a name that glows just as big and bright as her grand-daddy Hilton’s, Paris realized that it was going to take something drastic.  The former reality TV star started her search, and after several failed attempts in acting, but before she realized that her sister Nicky has way better fashion sense than she could ever hope to have, she starred in a sex tape that was leaked.  Can’t really brag about that one to daddy, but if it’s a popularity contest, this might have gotten her one step closer to her dream.

The Seven Psychopaths star Collin Farrell was busy back in 2005 with acting rehearsals, fatherhood, rehab, and getting caught on tape.  Male sex tapes are rare but still equally appreciated, so we were not overly alarmed when his sex tape was released.  (Female) fans swooned at the news that the Irish hunk was caught on tape wearing nothing but a mustache.  Colin’s sex tape release seemed to have been leaked without his consent since he decided to sue his then girlfriend in 2005.  The racy tape certainly captures Colin’s good side with dark but quality image.  Needless to say the sexy video has not hurt his career.

Leighton Meester is also known as Blair Waldorf from the hit American TV series Gossip Girl.  In the TV series Leighton’s character has a passionate relationship with her on-again off-again boyfriend Chuck Bass (actor Ed Westwick).  Throughout the seasons, Leighton and Ed have been filmed tearing off each other’s clothing acting on their adolescent impulses.  But, as Marvin Gaye once sang, “Ain’t nothing like the real thing baby…”.  Leighton now has a sex tape staring herself as a celebrity alongside the many tapes of her character Blair’s.

6. Ke$ha is another notorious bad-girl celebrity who has had a sex tape leaked.  The teen star started making waves in the music industry at only 18 years old.  She has since built a reputation for herself as a carefree party girl.  With this rapper-songstress I often find myself wondering which came first, the chicken or the egg.  Was Ke$ha always a reckless sex-symbol or did she sing about being a reckless sex-symbol and then believe her own hype?

7. Kim Kardashian is the mecca of all reality TV stars.  Other reality stars are simply taking notes on her life, trying to figure out how they can keep their hungry fans fed with endless outbursts and stunts.  Kim’s proved herself a pro by hooking up with one celebrity after the next and sculpting her body with the help of surgery, diet and working out along the way.  This mother-to-be might also have a regret or two about releasing sex tapes - even though they successfully highlighted her amazing curves.

These seven celebrities are all famous for their personalities and all starred in their very own sex video, living to tell the tale.  Some are a little more talented than others, but they all share one truth: their careers are still going strong and their videos raised interest in their lives.  So, now that they have won us over, I guess the only question left to ask is, “When is their next sex tape coming out?”

Fan Goes Down on Rapper Danny Brown

The unforgettable concert experience that we can’t get over

Has sex become an acceptable part of live performance?  This is just one of many questions that have sprung from the scene fans viewed at Danny Brown’s Minneapolis concert.  For those of you unfamiliar with Danny Brown, the 32 year old experimental Hip Hop rapper from Detroit Michigan started his career in the music industry in 2003.  His tour entitled ‘Worst of Both Worlds’ started in April with dates booked all the way to August 2013.

Hardly a week into his tour, during a concert at Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, MN on April 26th Brown faced an uncomfortable situation with an impulsive fan.  At the event in question while the rapper was performing a female fan got on stage showing her appreciation for the music.  The fan, on stage at crotch level pulled down Brown’s pants and proceeded to perform oral sex on the rapper.  Brown continued rapping and did not miss a beat while the fan gave him fellacio in front of the other musicians and the audience.

This public act has sparked much controversy in news articles and blogs that have taken two different stances on the situation.  One version is shared by Daniel June, one of four authors of JD Journal.  He comments on the event writing, “…It seems perhaps like an enviable position, if you are a man with adolescent sense of what’s cool. However, having some stranger perform sexual acts on you is a quick way to get a disease, to say the least.”  June interprets that Brown is a willing participant in the sexual act and as such acted irresponsibly.  Aside from the troubling health risk that June addresses, other concert goers have also expressed their disapproval of the act that took place.

The other view is one that is shared by Kitty Pryde, friend and fellow rapper on tour with Brown.  Pryde has been vocal about her outrage over the situation saying that the act in question was rape.  Kitty expressed that since the act was not consensual it must be constituted as rape.  She explains that due to certain pressures in the Hip Hop in the community it would have been social suicide to turn down or express negativity towards the willing female sexual aggressor.  She also rightly points out that if the roles were reversed, a man sexually aggressing a female, the public would be more outraged by the acts of the presumptuous fan.  With these factors in mind, it is hard to think of how a male performing Hip Hop artist can react and avoid aggressive advances from the opposite sex.

Without getting into a very serious debate on rape, the biased opinions that are often attached to different genders, and how we can ascertain who is at fault and who the victim is, I believe that there is another big issue that frankly I’m amazed has not come up yet: where was the security team?

The first question that I asked while reading about this incident was, how did this happen?  Or better yet, who let this happen?  Adoring fans will often try their best to get closer to artists they love in the hopes of being taking in photo with the person (group) they admire, or be spoken to directly, touched and even brought on stage.  So where does that leave the artist?

This is one of several questions I would love to address to the security team that was in charge at the Brown’s concert.  The young people attending Brown’s concert were unwittingly subjected to a live porno display due to one fan’s poor decision making, a lack of reaction on the artist’s side and a lack of security presence.  Fans are unpredictable.  Artist are paid to make art.  The security team is hired to keep everyone safe.  Yet still an aggressive fan was able to get on stage, give head and get her picture taken without interference from security.

Does that sound safe to you? In June’s remarks, he addresses that Brown’s health was put at risk.  Disturbed fans all witnessed, at the very least, indecent exposure watching the scene.  Pryde believes that Brown was raped, and if this is true the audience was eye-witness to sexual assault.  If the security team that worked the night of the concert deems a music performance turned orgy as a safe environment, just what would they consider dangerous?

We all rely on security services at organized events to define the standards of artist-audience interaction.  Brown’s concert proves that when security teams do not have standards, neither do we.  Perhaps promoters will take a closer look into what security standards are for future events.  With this knowledge they could better communicate the type of show they are promoting and the audience would be able to choose whether or not they want to be a part of it.

In the United States of America, there a number of states with troubling teen pregnancy statistics. While sex health information becomes more readily available to the public on the internet, who’s talking to the youth about it?

In this graph the red states are those which have the higher rates of teen pregnancy in the USA.

These southern states’ teen rates are watched attentively as they are in a critical state that residents want to see improved.  There are several theories of the possible factors that have led to this increase in teen pregnancies, however one major contributing factor that should not be overlooked is sexual education.

Many schools have the right to choose the type sexual education in the schools, and it has long been debated as to how early and how much information should be given to young people to inform them and not encourage them towards sex. This is a fine line that gets blurred over different religious beliefs and personal moral standards.  In a comprehensive sex education objective, information about contraceptives mingle with tips on abstinence.  Abstinence-based sex education, however, underlines the potential dangers of sexual activity omitting information about contraceptives.

The two programs seem to contrast, so can they coincide?

In West Virginia abstinence-based comprehensive sex education including contraception has been primarily stressed from the West Virginia State Board of Education since June, 2008.

So far, this objective has not seen very positive results. With a rank of 40, West Virginia is among the 10 worst states in the U.S. for teen births. This high ranking means that West Virginia’s teen pregnancy has been steadily since 2005; and that’s something to talk about.

In this state, at George Washington High School in Charleston, they brought in speaker Pam Stenzel, Founder of Enlighten Communications Inc., a not for profit organization for a school assembly to talk about sex education.  Stenzel and her organization provide structured abstinence education for the masses and during this assembly she shared her views on abstinence and contraceptives.

GW high school student Katlyn Campbell made a complaint against her school principal who agrees with Stenzel and her advice on abstinence-only sex education.  Campbell found Stenzel’s advice shaming to promiscuous girls and her advice about contraceptives misleading.

Stenzel was quoted saying several controversial messages to give Campbell this idea and Campbell believes that many students felt uncomfortable.

Stenzel proposes that teens can just stop having sex and ignore their sexual urges.  The most damning part about Stenzel’s message is that she casted doubt on the use of contraceptives.  This stance underlines the self-combative nature of a having a combined abstinence-based comprehensive sex education objective as one approach eventually contradicts the other.  Moreover, when that contradiction actually negates the use of contraceptive methods, this puts a huge strain on the youth so that they become even more at risk.

While Stenzel tried to keep religion out of her speech, the message of abstinence until marriage stems from

religious teachings. Advocating no sex before marriage in a country that doesn’t accept gay marriage makes Stenzel’s solution to lower teen pregnancy is exclusive, unrealistic, and insulting.

Stenzel’s religious stance really puts her education and background in sexual education into question.  Doesmother with an STI can pass her infection onto her child, even a married partner could be a carrier.  There are several other factors that determine sex safety that need to be addressed with information about contraceptives.

So, if the sex education specialist refuses to acknowledge and address all of the issues, where is the safe place that these at risk curious teens can go to get all of the information?  The answer to this question is the key to improving accessibility to sex education and making a strong effort to end teenage pregnancy.
